Steps to Calories Calculator

Step calories come from distance and weight: 10,000 steps at an average stride is about 7.6 km, and walking burns roughly 0.95 kcal per kilogram per kilometre — so at 70 kg, 10,000 steps burn about 500 kcal (gross, including resting burn).

How it works

Phones and watches turn steps into calories with proprietary formulas and no explanation. This page shows its working: steps × stride gives distance; distance × weight, at walking's well-measured energy cost, gives calories. The result is deliberately shown two ways — gross (everything burned during the walking time) and net (only the extra above resting) — because the difference, about a third, is where double-counting creeps into food budgets.

The physics is unglamorous: walking is moving mass over distance, so a 100 kg walker genuinely burns about 40% more than a 70 kg walker over the same route, and a short-strided walker takes more steps to earn the same distance. Any single 'calories per step' figure (0.04 is the popular one) silently assumes a particular weight and stride — fine for its author, wrong for everyone else.

Treat the output as ±20%. Terrain, pace, wind, footwear and individual walking economy all move the truth, and no step-based method — including the expensive ones on wrists — escapes that band. For budgeting, net calories are the conservative and correct choice.

The method

Distance = steps × stride ÷ 100,000 (km). Gross energy ≈ 0.95 kcal per kg per km (moderate walking, consistent with ~3.3–4.3 MET values); net ≈ 0.62 kcal/kg/km after removing resting expenditure. Figures are estimates with an honest ±20% band.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories do 10,000 steps really burn?

For most adults, somewhere between 300 and 600 kcal gross — the spread is mostly body weight and stride. The 70 kg example here lands near 500; at 90 kg the same steps give roughly 650.

Why does my watch show fewer calories?

Many watches report net or 'active' calories by default — the figure after resting burn is removed. Compare like with like using the net row on this page before concluding either device is wrong.

Do running steps burn more per step?

Per distance, running costs roughly 1.5–1.7× walking per kilometre (see the running calories calculator), and strides lengthen too — so per step the difference is larger still. This page's factors are for walking.
